**The X-Factor***
--As paranormal paramours Mulder and Scully return with 'The X Files: I Want To Believe', Total Film visits the set to see if X still marks the spot in a post 9/11 age...

February 28, 2008.
Total Film is visiting the set of 'The X Files: I Want to Believe', but something is wrong. Normally, we're invited to stand up close to the director, the unit publicist whispering promises about "observing the process". Hell, normally, we're handed press notes-a script even, and offered lengthly descriptions of the plot and every character in it. Not tonight.

Tonight, we're driven to the former Riverview psychiatric hospital just outside Vancouver, Canada, and escorted into a dark, squalid holding room that looks like a prison cell (and probably was). We can watch the shoot, but only from a monitor without sound, situated a long, long way down a dingy corridor.

What we do know is this: the scene we are witnessing is set in a Catholic hospital, where ex-FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder are talking about the condition of a mystery patient who's crucial to their case. Nobody is willing to divulge even the tiniest of details about the plot-like what the hell Billy Connolly is doing wandering the halls in his pyjamas? Is he the mystery patient perhaps? "I'd tell you", the Scottish comedian quips as he flaps by, "but then I'd have to kill you!"

It seems Connolly isn't entirely joking. The non-disclosure agreement he and every cast and crew member signed, is taken very seriously. No one on set is about to spill any beans and producer/co-writer Frank Spotnitz, who produced, wrote and directed more than 40 episodes of the TV series during its nine-year run from 1993-2002, is unapologetic.

"There are millions of directions we could go with Mulder and Scully and we just want to preserve the element of surprise", he explains, shrugging his shoulders. "So the first thing we did was refuse to let anybody read the script. Only people who absolutely had to read it for their jobs were able to read it and even they didn't get copies of it. The scripts are still in a safe in our production office with a video camera in the room. You only get to read it in that room and you have to sign in and out." Spotnitz grins. "So while we've had a lot of stuff circulate on the internet", he continues, "I'm happy to say at least as much of it is bogus as is genuine. Nobody knows what to believe... and that works great for us!"

Even David Duchovny, returning off a Golden Globe win for his TV comedy Californication:cool: admits that he had to beg director, co-writer and producer Chris Carter for his own script. "Chris and Frank first came to my house and dropped off the script to get me to sign on, but then they came back an hour later and took it away!" he laughs. "There was a while where I couldn't get my own copy and I'd have to go to Chris' office to read and work on it. Finally I said, 'You know, unless you want me showing up completely unprepared, you should probably let one go!'"

So what can we believe? The web is abuzz with talk of storylines involving medical experiments, mad scientists, wicked priests, werewolves and aliens, but there are some facts Total Film can confirm. The film takes place six years after we last saw Mulder and Scully in the final episode of the TV series (should you need reminding, they finished the show as fugitives on the run from the FBI) and this has bled into the new film: it's not just the actors, but also the characters that are six years older. Total Film earlier explored Mulder's new office, located not in the basement of the FBI, but at his home, and it soon becomes clear that Mulder and Scully are no longer FBI agents.
Not that you need to know the backstory. Duchovny is at pains to stress that the new movie is accessible to all, not just 'X-Files' nuts. "It's a stand-alone thriller in the mode of 'The Silence Of The Lambs' rather than a movie that leans heavily on the backstory of the show's mythology", reveals the actor.

To get a bigger picture, though, Total Film soon realises the only method is to ask everyone for a scrap of data, and then piece those shreds together. So we approach Chris Carter, a youthful looking, white haired 41 year old surfer-type whose playful poodle Larry sits beside him. Reluctantly, Carter offers one key tidbit. "It's not a mythology episode and there are no aliens", he drawls, hesitantly. "It's really drawing from the news headlines. There are things that you'll recognise, that we're all familiar with and dealing with today in one way or another." For all the talk of mad scientists and werewolves then, it seems 'I Want To Believe' might just be holding a grimy mirror to a post-9/11 world rather than offering a escape hatch into a land of blissful fantasy.

Spotnitz won't say. "It's much more about the relationship between Mulder and Scully this time," he insists, shifting the focus. "But since this is an X Files movie, it's also scary, frightening and very dark. And Billy Connolly's character is especially creepy!"
The Scottish funnyman is not the only new character on display, expect two new FBI agents.....one played by 'Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip's' Amanda Peet and the other by LA rapper Xzibit, but Connolly is clearly a pivotal figure in the new story. Naturally, infuriatingly, no one will confirm a single damn thing, but he may or may not be a priest who Mulder wants to recruit to help solve their case. Scully, obviously, is more hesitant, being a woman of science.

Whatever the hell he is or isn't, Spotnitz insists Connolly was their first choice. "We approached him because we're big fans and think he can do just about anything", he beams. Carter later adds: "I'm glad you get who he is and I don't have to explain any more than that, because you're not American."

And Connolly himself? He's just flattered to accept the role and still seems bemused that he flies under the radar in the US. "I'd been working on the movie a few weeks when David Duchovny finally turned to me and said, 'Were you a squirrel in 'Open Season'? My kids loved you!'"

Here's the thing: the budget on 'I Want To Believe' is only $30m. It's worth bringing up because it indicates that everyone-filmmakers, actors and most of all the studio-knows there's a big risk factor in making a movie six years after the show that inspired it went off air. It's for this reason that Duchovny and Anderson have deferred their payments in back-end deals, a gamble on whether anybody still cares. "It's an investment in the future of the franchise," Duchovny says bluntly. "If we make an immensely successful movie and all the money is on the screen, we may get to make more."

It's no coincidence that the series went off air shortly after 9/11 and after the New York Times authoritatively delegated it 'out' in an 'In & Out' list published around that time. Yet Spotnitz is not worried that the government conspiracy slant of the show may be difficult to navigate in today's political climate.

"This movie is not a conspiracy story so it's not relevant," he states, a little too defensively. "I think everyone can agree that a lot has changed in the world since 9/11, but all we can do is try to dig deep about what we are all feeling right now and put that in the movie. I know we've done that, so whether it jives with what the world is feeling or not, we'll see..."

It's clear that nobody has much of a clue whether the movie will sink or swim. But they want to believe...

And Carter does. He, alone, thinks he's got that answer. Flashing a casual smile he cites the New York comic-con he attended with Duchovny and Anderson. It was sold out. With screaming fans. "When all these people showed up and were still crazy for the show, it honestly came as a surprise to me," he marvels. "What's also interesting is there are people who are now in college who come up to me and say, 'My mom and dad wouldn't let me watch 'The X Files' because I was too young.'" The smile widens. "So there is a whole new audience that can be introduced to it now."

DAVID DUCHOVNY: Mulling with Mulder...
How does it feel being back in Mulder's skin?

It feels good because we've been talking about it since the show ended and it was always my hope that we'd continue in movie form. We did nine years of the show and it was a natural transition, so I'm hoping that this is the start of many more films.

How did it feel being back on set with Gillian Anderson

I did a lot of action sequences on my own in Vancouver before Gillian even arrived and I thought it would be a little awkward and it was, but as time went on and I got to work more with Gillian in certain scenes, it began to feel familiar in a good way.

What's going on with Mulder when we see him in this film? There's a six year gap for us and for them also and the gap has been filled in an interesting manner. Mulder's having a career crisis and there's definitely an emotional sense of things going on in his life in terms of women that would not have happened in the series. I think people will be surprised and a little shocked at what has happened in those six years. :O
Do you think it's a risky move to make the movie now?

Whether or not we'll get the nostalgia vote or we'll get a vote from people discovering it again, you also hope you can convert new fans to it because quality always works. It would be really nice for it to continue in some kind of cyclical capacity every three or four years, but if this project was the last thing we ever did with 'The X Files' then I'm happy with the work and the impact and all the things we did with the show and the movies.

GILLIAN ANDERSON: Scully seeks the truth...
How did it feel being back on the set with David after all these years?

Because we've seen each other in between those years and we did a week of rehearsals and spent some time together in LA before coming up to Vancouver, we kind of got the opportunity to gauge where we were at. Fortunately, that dynamic was still alive and well, so that when we started shooting again, it just showed up when we showed up.

How did you approach Scully's character six years later? It's an interesting balance to strike between playing somebody that people recognise and expect to see, and playing someone who has evolved and gotten older. I'm relying on natural aging to inform the character, but there've been some bumps along the way where I expected it to be easier than it actually was. Regardless of whether I played the character before or not, it has brought its own challenges.

How have you changed since you started on the X Files?

I started out as a 24 year old growing up in this Petri dish of this series where I fell and tripped and did everything in a very in-your-face public way. I think today, I make different choices and get affected by things differently, and so in that sense I've matured as anybody matures when they get older.

How do you think the X Files movie reflects today's politics and conspiracies?

This film has very little to do with what's going on in the rest of the world and I think that's what people search out at various times in current events. They want venues for escape and that's something we're providing them.

What do you think of your place in TV history now?

I occasionally see us in reruns or catch glimpses of YouTube clips that people put together with Mulder and Scully, and I've gotten more of a sense of how big and intense and iconic it was in retrospect than I ever did at the time.

Reopening 'The X-Files'
posted June 17, 2008 3:47 PM

By Chad Greene
On The X-Files, whenever FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder wanted to talk to his secret informant, he had to use a couple strips of tape to make the mysterious man’s namesake letter, X, in the window of his apartment and hope for a prompt response. It is not that hard to get a hold of X-Files creator Chris Carter—a couple calls to the appropriate publicists will do the trick.
But it is hard—downright impossible, in fact—to get the writer/director/producer to reveal the super-secret plot of this summer’s The X Files: I Want to Believe, which will reunite the embattled-but-not-embittered believer Mulder (David Duchovny) with his still-slightly skeptical partner Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) six years after the Emmy Award-, Golden Globe- and Peabody Award-winning series ended its nine-year run on Fox and 10 years after the franchise’s first film earned $189.2 million worldwide.

Under intense interrogation, however, Carter was willing to talk—about this second installment’s tone-establishing title, about the enduring appeal of Mulder and Scully’s “cerebral” relationship and about—when it comes to paranormal phenomena—if he himself is more of a Mulder or more of a Scully.
I know the title of this second X-Files film is I Want to Believe, but when it comes to the steps you took to prevent plot leaks, it sounds as if another one of your iconic catchphrases, “Trust No One,” was closer to the truth. Can you tell us a little bit about those security measures you put in place to prevent people like me from knowing what’s going on in the movie?
[Laughs.] Yes, I’ll tell you. Well, we actually took security measures on the television series, and we took, I would say, more drastic security measures on the first X-Files film. We printed those scripts on red paper, thinking that people couldn’t Xerox them. But during the first week of filming, the entire plot was revealed in the National Enquirer. So we realized we had to be even more I’d call it “paranoid” this time around. And so we worked out with 20th Century Fox a system where only certain people saw the script for The X-Files: I Want to Believe. And those scripts had the names of those people on them, and the scripts were locked up. Because, often times in Fox’s experience, it’s not the people you give the scripts to who talk about it. It’s that they put them on their coffee tables, and then other people pick them up and read them, and then they talk about it.
So even David and Gillian didn’t have scripts for the longest time. We let them read the scripts, but then we took them away from them. And we only showed scripts to key crew members. They had to read those scripts in a room where the script was, first of all, under lock and key and, second of all, they were being video taped as they read the scripts so they couldn’t call anybody or they couldn’t take pictures of the script pages, for example. That was all overkill. Most of these people we worked with, we’ve worked with before and we trust them. But we thought, ‘Why not make sure that we’re covering our steps through every part of the process?’ And, in doing so, we still probably have kept the plot a secret, but as you make a movie, more and more people have to watch it in order to finish it. We’ve asked people to keep the secret, and so far everyone seems to have done so.
That’s a really impressive accomplishment, especially in today’s spoiler-centric culture. Makes for a great story, too.
Yeah, it does. But the truth is, I don’t know if we’ll ultimately be successful. But I would certainly like to make it feel like, on opening day, even if people think they know what it’s about, they’re not sure what it’s about.
Even though the plot of the picture remains a secret, I understand that this is a standalone story as opposed to a “mythology” story?
It is, but the more I think about that and the more I talk about that, the more I realize that’s not exactly true. It’s not about the shadow-government conspiracy, it is not a story about aliens, so it does not fit into the “mythology arc.” But it certainly deals with Mulder and Scully’s relationship, and in that way, it is actually a part of the mythology since the mythology episodes also served to explore that relationship.
Was that decision—to not concentrate on the shadow government and the alien invasion—due, in part, to a belief that you had to reintroduce The X-Files, and these characters, to audiences after a six-year break?
In part. But also, because we didn’t have a television series running, we had the luxury and the ability to just do a really good scary movie—or as scary as we could make it with a PG-13 rating—and that was what we were looking forward to doing. We had done the first movie, which was a mythology movie. This one need not be a mythology movie because there was nothing that said it had to be. It also, as you say, allowed us to create something that would play to a broader audience and I think X-Files fans will appreciate that, if we are successful with this movie, there will be another one.
But if there was a third X Files feature film, might that one return to the “mythology arc” created during the series?
We’ve discussed a number of different approaches going forward. But I always get nervous, because I think it’s premature. I don’t want to count my chickens. I want to do a great movie first, then think about what we’re going to do next.
Since we can’t talk about the plot, I wanted to ask about the title of this second film, I Want to Believe. Of course, it was the slogan on the poster in Mulder and Scully’s office, but does this choice also reflect something of the tone that you’re trying for here?
Yes. But I think, more so, it is emblematic of the series itself and the characters’ struggle, which has been between Scully’s faith in her science and Mulder’s faith in his … in the end, in the unexplainable—that nothing can be explained, and his wrestling with his own nonreligious faith. And Scully’s wrestling with her religious faith. All of these things come into play.
Speaking of Mulder and Scully, can you talk about what makes the relationship between those characters so central to The X-Files, why it resonates so powerfully with the fans, and what David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson bring to those roles and to that relationship?
It was an on-screen chemistry that just worked from the very beginning. That’s miraculous, to me. They always just lit up the screen. And we gave them interesting things to say and interesting things to do, but I think what is sometimes not appreciated is how much more they brought to those characters than what was on the page. This so-called sexual tension, really, it was a cerebral relationship, and I think that’s what interests me most about them, the way they relate to one another, the way they protect one another and the respect they have for one another. Those are sadly missing in most relationships. … I imagined it, originally, as sort of my idealized relationship, and David and Gillian brought it to life in a way that nothing that is on the page ever does.
Going back to the tone, one reason that’s often offered to explain The X-Files’ popularity in the ’90s is that it very much resonated with widespread mistrust of the government at that time. Around the time the series ended, though, Americans—in the wake of 9/11—were of a much more “United We Stand” mentality. Do you feel as though we’ve come around to mistrusting the government just in time for this second feature film?
[Laughs.] I think we have. But I think that our mistrust is different now. I grew up in a post-Watergate world. We are now in a post-Twin Towers world, and that mistrust … has a different quality, I think.
Did you feel as though you needed to recalibrate your sensibilities or material at all, then, or did you feel that what you had established before would translate to today?
There wasn’t any revamping that needed to be done. The FBI never really played the bad guys in The X-Files, they played a tool of the bad guys. And because we’re not telling a mythology story, we really didn’t have to go too deeply into that.

When it comes to supernatural and extraterrestrial phenomena, would you say that you’re more of a Mulder or more of a Scully?
[Chuckles.] Ah-ha. That’s a good question. I would have always said that, during the course of the series, that I was more of a Scully. But the truth is, I’m very much a Mulder—I want to believe, also.
But even though, at least at the start, you would have cast yourself more in that skeptical Scully role, this type of paranormal material has been central to your career. What is it about this material that intrigues you—and your audiences—so?
I think it excites our sense of wonder, our natural fear of the unknown. I think those are really the things that we’re playing with, as well as our spiritual nature.
Do you also feel that, within those stories, there is also space to—in the tradition of The Twilight Zone—tackle topical issues?
I think that we’re often times compared to The Twilight Zone, but it’s not really an apt comparison because they dealt with things allegorically. We both dealt with the unknown, but we dealt with it in different ways. And it’s funny that no one has attempted to do another Twilight Zone. I don’t know why, exactly. Maybe that series did it so well that there’s no reason to do it again, but it would be an interesting problem to solve.

One last question: Although you directed episodes of the series, you did not direct the first X-Files film. Why did you choose to take on that role this time?
When I’m writing something, I’m imagining it in pictures. And it is a sort of a natural path to direct your own material. It’s simply a function of, first of all, I love to direct, and second of all, I want to bring those ideas and images to life. Because I had directed episodes, and because I was so deep into the show, having to communicate those things to someone else just would have taken that much more effort.

CHRIS CARTER IS NOT A LONE GUNMAN. Co-conspirator-and co-writer and co-producer-Frank Spotnitz reveals 'the real secret of The X-Files"

Even though he had loved series like The Twilight Zone and Star Trek as a kind, Spotnitz tells BOXOFFICE that, when it comes to supernatural and extraterrestrial phenomena, he's "way more of a Scully than a Mulder" - way more of a skeptic than an believer.
"I don't believe in little green men and flying saucers, but there's a lot that's really interesting about this quest for "The Truth," this quest to understand things that are beyond our grasp" Spotnitz says. "And what became increasingly clear as the TV series went on were the parallels between the search for extraterrestrial life and for faith, religious faith. And there's so many ironies built into the design of The X-Files, because while Mulder is the one who wants to believe- that's what his poster says, 'I want to believe' - and is the one who's willing to believe in bizarre phenomena, Scully is a scientist who is also a Catholic who wears a cross around her neck. And that's very, very rich and really endless in terms of the number of stories and the types of ideas that you could talk about through those characters and through that subject matter."

Of course, there's only one story that Carter and Spotnitz are telling through Mulder and Scully in The X-Files: I Want To Believe - and neither of the co-conspirators will divulge the plot.
"People, as much as they think they want to know, really don't want to know." Spotnitz insists. "You really want to go to a movie and be surprised and enjoy the story and not go in knowing what's going to happen. There's a power to experiencing something fresh that we don't want to diminish by talking about it."But what we are talking about is the type of movie it is, because it's very different from the first movie we did in 1998, which was sort of a big summer blockbuster type of story - big alien spaceship, lots of action and lots of visual effects," he says. "This is a much smaller, more intimate, more emotional and more personal story. It's got the characters in the forefront, and their emotional lives and personal conflicts, in a way that we couldn't really do very often on television. Because when you're doing twenty something episodes, there's only so much of the personal capital of the characters that you can spend before you start to get tired-it becomes a soap opera, and you get worn out by all the emotional journeys that your characters take if you're doing that every week. But that wasn't a problem here. We were able to really take them fare."
Consider that a returning of a favor, as it was the relationship between the characters of FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully - and the actors who played them, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson - that took their creators so far.

"You can't overstate how important those characters, and those actors, are to The X-Files," say Spotnitz. "They're two actor who have incredible chemistry together and then, separately, play their characters so beautifully. But just speaking of them as characters, among the many things that are so rich about them is that they were so perfectly suited to each other. That they were perfect opposites - believe, skeptic - a great vehicle for telling stories about the supernatural, but also two diametrically opposed ways of understanding the world around us.
"Yet, they complement each other so beautifully, because they both were - and are- very smart characters who respected each other," he says. "And I think that's what was so powerful about that relationship, that they had that respect for each other, even when they disagreed, which they consistently did. That was very romantic, that mutual respect that they had for one another.
"But what was interesting to me was that, as it became increasingly obvious after four or five years that these people loved each other, what was keeping them apart was their quest - the very thing that brought them together was the very thing that was making it impossible for them to be a couple," Spotnitz says. "As the series went on, that changed, and they did find each other and they had a child together. But then it became another force that kept them apart."

And what was that force - more powerful, even, than a shadow government laying the groundwork for an alien invasion?
"David Duchovny's leaving the series," Spotnitz says with a laugh. "That was the most powerful force. But, yeah, what is 'The Truth,' capital T, capital T? I don't know what that is, but i know that the power of their relationship is the real secret of The X-Files.

'X-Files: I Want to Believe': Los Angeles Film Festival Sneak Peek

The Los Angeles Film Festival gave X-Files fans a long awaited sneak peak at this summer's sequel, X-Files: I Want to Believe. Entertainment Weekly hosted a screening of two clips from the film and a panel discussion with star David Duchovny, creator and director Chris Carter, and writer Frank Spotnitz.

The clips were so revealing, viewers could gather the following: Scully and Mulder are in it, they're looking for something, and they disagree about how to go about it. The panelists were equally tight-lipped about plot details, but at least one clip showed Scully bringing up Mulder's sister, so that made the crowd go wild.

Despite their best efforts they couldn't keep everything a secret, here are 10 other tidbits the panelists let slip during the presentation:

1.Scully and Mulder are All Grown Up:
"I thought that was the smart first movie that Frank and Chris made was to allow time to go on in the world of The X-Files as it's gone on in the world at large," said Duchovny. "So that we wouldn't be trying to play these characters set in stone as we last saw them, or even when you look back when Gillian [Anderson] and I first played the characters in 1993. I think that's probably one of the most interesting things as an actor to try and embody is the same character as time goes by and not wanting to just be a cartoon guy who's frozen in time but actually working with changes of life or consciousness that happen to all of us with time.

2. But it's still Scully and Mulder:"Mulder and Scully I think for us as writers came back very, very quickly," said Spotnitz. "They were there. I think very quickly we had pretty deep convictions about where they would be in their lives and what the nature of their relationship would be. It was intuitive and emotional."
3. There are some new people in the movie too:
"Amanda Peet, we were looking for somebody who had Gillian's gravity and intelligence and authority to be this really strong, smart, capable young FBI agent commanding this manhunt," said Spotnitz. "Xzibit was just discovered in casting. We had no clue. As it turned out, he had done a rap song that mentioned The X-Files years ago. Then Billy Connolly was somebody that Chris had really wanted to work with for a very long time, admired from a movie called Mrs. Brown and he wanted to do it as well. He actually has a lovely goatee and we had to shave it off for which we felt very guilty." Duchovny joked about Xzibit, "He pimped Chris's ride."

4.It's still Mulder who "Wants to Believe":
"I Want to Believe, if you remember the poster on Mulder's wall in his office from the pilot episode said, 'I want to believe' on it," said Carter. "So it drew from the very beginning. It really also I think sums up, I'd call it the nature of Mulder's quest which is he struggles with his faith and the things unseen and the unknown and the mysterious. So it's not that he takes things just on faith. He actually struggles with that faith."

5. It's for fans and their friends, so bring a newbie:
"This movie was made for all the people in this room tonight," said Spotnitz. "If it weren't for the fans of the show, this movie never would have gotten made. We wanted it to work for the fans and especially work for the fans. But then having said that, we needed it to work for the great big audience out there. We were especially excited at the idea of introducing this show and these characters to people who were too young to watch The X-Files when it was on originally, which was quite a few people. So it's designed to work on both levels."

6. Don't come looking for nostalgia:
"I don't think there was any kind of nostalgic feel to the film," said Duchovny. "It really felt from the inception all the way through execution that we were just making a good film. We just wanted to make a good thriller. The subject matter called a certain amount of nostalgia in the characters and everything but it wasn't going to be one of these films that was constantly winking and nodding and trying to pander that kind of nostalgia. I think it's inherent in the enterprise but we really wanted to make a great film that stood on its own."

7. Sometimes they made it up as they went along:
"One of the hardest nights of shooting, we were filming in a place that was not exactly in the script and it was not exactly scripted," said Carter. "I swear to you, no one on the crew including this man knew what I was doing. I was just like leading people. 'We're going to shoot here and we're going to do this, we're going to do this, we're going to do this.' It's not a good way to make a movie."

8. It's old school X-Files:
"What I've been saying is I think it harkens back to the kind of beginnings of the show," said Duchovny. "The first couple years, the first three years where we were really the only thriller, horror, scary show on television. I know that everybody loves Mulder and Scully and the relationships and all that but I think originally, that's what people fell in love with. Here's a show that's doing this. There hasn't been a show like this that's doing that. In many ways, we got back to our roots of the show."

9. And they're still talking about William:
"William is referenced," said Carter. "We have not forgotten him. They have not forgotten him. This is a movie that as we've said, not a mythology movie, so it doesn't depend on his absence or existence. It is a story that takes place apart from him. That's not to say that we've forsaken him."

10. This is not the end:
"It's set up for another movie if this movie does well," said Carter. But if it were, Spotnitz added, "I felt like at the end of this movie, if this were the last time we saw Mulder and Scully, I'd be very proud to leave it at that moment. I hope it's not, but if it is then I feel pretty good about the work."

Диалог между Малдером и Скалли!!

Mulder: Tell me. Tell me what you see.
Father Joe: I see a face. I see eyes staring out.
Mulder: Who? Who is it?
Father Joe: It's unclear. Like through dirty glass.

MULDER: Scully, what does he mean by dirty glass?
SCULLY: Mulder...
MULDER: What?
SCULLY: Stop!
MULDER: Okay fine, we'll just give up like everybody else.
SCULLY: This is not my job anymore, Mulder.
MULDER: No, that's right. That's right. You-you're just like my booking agent now, right?

SCULLY: This is my fault.
MULDER: What do you mean it's your fault?
SCULLY: For getting you involved in this.
MULDER: No, no. It was the right thing to do, Scully.
SCULLY: This is not about finding an FBI Agent. This is about you trying to save your sister.

MULDER: My sister is dead.
SCULLY: But that hasn't stopped you from looking for her. Mulder, I have been through too many years with you -- believing you can. You can not save her. Not now, not ever.
MULDER: (yells to other agents) We're gonna need those men back!
SCULLY: Mulder, what are you doing?
MULDER: (scoffs and walks away) Trying to ignore you.
